Did you know you can build a lightsaber along with building your droid in Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios? During my big family’s December 2022 Walt Disney World trip, I finally got to build my own lightsaber! This was a dream of mine and an item I had on my Disney Bucket List! I am so excited to share the details of building a lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop.

The details of building a lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop are based on my December 2022 experience.

Reservations

You do not need to have reservations, but it is highly recommended. This experience has limited space, and it tends to fill up quickly. Reservations can be made 60 days in advance in the My Disney Experience app and/or Walt Disney World website.

In my experience with booking for this experience, I found that slots open around 5:45 am EST. So if you are looking to score a reservation, I recommend getting on around that time or a little early, so you do not miss your chance. It is also mentioned in a response on planDisney’s website. Typically reservations, especially with dining, open at 6 am EST.  Again this is what I experience when I booked my family’s reservation. If you do not score a reservation, I recommended checking because sometimes a slot will open up.

You do need a credit card for a reservation. It is just for collateral if you do not show up for the reservation. You can cancel your reservation up to one day prior. Failing to do so will result in a cancelation fee per builder which is the cost of the experience.

You will make the reservations for the number of builders (not the guest of the builder). Each builder (paid guest) is can bring one additional guest. The guest can not build a lightsaber.

You will pay for the experience when you at during your reservation. This experience also needs separate Hollywood Studios admission.

Disney mentions that walk-ups could be available. It just depends on the availability. I do not recommend waiting for a walk-up opportunity because this is a popular experience, and there is a high chance of spots not being available.

Age Recommendation

This experience is recommended for 5 years or older. One person in the group/party must be 14 or older. Again the builder can only bring in one guest.

Location

Savi’s Workshop is located in Galaxy’s Edge in Hollywood Studios. There is no sign with the name of the workshop due to Savi’s Workshop is trying to stay undercover from the First Order. Savi’s Workshops operates as a scrap yard selling “scrap metal” aka lightsabers, but only a few know its true operation. To find the workshop, you will need to look for the blue banner. The picture below is what you will need to keep an eye out for.

Savi’s Workshop is located on the left side of The Droid Depot

Check-in Process

You can check in no more than 15 minutes before your reservation time. During the check-in process, you will select which lightsaber (aka scrap metal) you want to build. There are 4 to choose from. I will go over this a little later in this post.

During check-in, you will pay for your lightsaber. The cost is $249.99 plus tax.

Once you select your lightsaber, you will be given a pin that correlates with the type of saber you have chosen. This is yours to keep and is part of the cost.

What is Included with Cost?

With the $249.99 (plus tax) price tag, you get everything you need to build your lightsaber hilt, including the 31-inch blade, a pin, a carrying case (Lightsaber Seath), 1 Kyber Crystal, and the memories of getting to experience this symbolic ceremony.

Types of Lightsaber

There are 4 types of lightsaber hilts to choose from. I included the descriptions that can be found on the Walt Disney World webpage for Savi’s Workshop

  • Peace and Justice: “Salvaged scraps from fallen Jedi temples and crashed starships in these Republic-era designs honor the galaxy’s former guardians.”
  • Power and Control: “Originally forged by dark side warriors, this style features rumored remnants from the Sith homeworld and abandoned temples.”
  • Elemental Nature: “This theme embodies the Force—an energy created by all living things, like Brylark trees, Cartusion whale bones, and Rancor teeth.”
  • Protection and Defense“Hilt materials bear mysterious motifs and inscriptions that reconnect users with the ancient wellspring of the Force.”

Below is the image of the lightsabers that were available to choose from during my experience (December 2023). Here is the link for a better look at the lightsabers we got to choose from

Dec 2022

I know they are slowly coming out with newer editions of the lightsabers. During my January 2023 trip, the only one at that time that was a new edition of the Peace and Justice was available. I am not sure if they have the others yet. So keep that in mind that they might have newer editions

Building Process

The whole building/assembly process is part of a symbolic ceremony. I do not want to give out too much about it. I want to leave an element of surprise. Part of the ceremony is where you pick your kyber stone. Once you select your stone, you will get to build your lightsaber. The different parts of your lightsaber come out in a tray.

The tray had a grey capsule (cassette), 4 sleeves, 2 emitters, 2 switch sets, and 2 endcaps. To assemble your lightsaber (hilt), you pick 2 sleeves, 1 emitter, 1 switch set, and 1 endcap. The blade will be attached toward the end of the ceremony.

The cast members are there to help guide you in the assembly process.

Kyber Crystal

In the ceremony, you will choose your kyber crystal. The kyber crystal determines the color of your lightsaber. There are 4 colors to choose from.

  • Blue: lightsaber color of Obi-Wan Kenobi
  • Green: lightsaber color of Luke Skywalker and Yoda
  • Purple: lightsaber color of Mace Windu
  • Red: lightsaber color of Darth Vader, Count Dooku, Darth Maul, and Kylo Ren

Click here to watch my Tiktok showing off the different lightsaber colors.

If you want more than one kyber crystal, more can be purchased at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. This store is in Galaxy’s Edge (Bantu) in Hollywood Studios.

Length of Time

Our reservation time was 7:45 pm, and we got about 10 minutes before our time. After check-in, we waited about 10-15 mins before our group for the build got to enter, so around 8 o’clock. The ceremony/building of the lightsaber is roughly 20-25 minutes. My family and I left the workshop between 8:20 pm and 8:25 pm. I would say the whole experience is about 45 minutes, so keep that in mind with your plans.

A Look at The Lightsabers My Family and I Built

Some Key Information about the Lightsaber

The lightsaber is battery-operated, and the location of the batteries is located in a black battery canister at the bottom of the grey capsule (chassis). You will have to remove the endcap to get to it. 3 AAA Batteries do come with your lightsaber.

The information on changing the batteries is on the tag that comes on the carrying case. The tag also has information on about kyber crystal.

Building a lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop was one of the top highlights of our trip, and it will be something I will never forget. My family and I enjoyed it, especially my father, a huge Star Wars fan! It was definitely an out-of-this-world experience and truly felt closer to the force than ever!
